The importance of training your dog to sit at road sides

It may seem like common sense to keep your dog close by and safe when near/crossing a road, which most people do by having a tight grip of the lead. One simple way to enhance and reinforce that safety as well as making a daily task a lot easier is to train your dog to sit before crossing a road, it helps to minimise that danger of your dog rushing out and potentially pulling both of you into oncoming traffic.

When you need to cross, walk to the edge of the curb with your dog close to you, ask them to ‘sit’ and reward them with a treat once they do. Next, tell them to ‘wait’ whilst you are checking to see it’s clear. When it is safe, calmly give your dog the command to ‘walk’ or ‘go’ while you cross the road. Remember to use plenty of yummy

treats to help your dog

learn these commands.

Although your dog should always be safely on the lead when you’re near a road, it’s a good idea to teach them an emergency command such as ‘stop’,

so you can get them to stop if they are faced with a potentially dangerous situation, this is also extremely useful in multiple different scenarios.
